Aaliyah Chavez scores 33 points as OU women's basketball outlasts NC State in OT

NORMAN — Aaliyah Chavez continued her brilliance on Wednesday.

Fresh off her 29-point outing against Florida State, Chavez led a 10-point, second-half comeback, dropping a career-high 33 points as OU outlasted NC State103-98 in overtime Wednesday at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners have won seven consecutive games.

Chavez, the true freshman guard, who was the No. 1 high school player nationally, was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday for the second time this season following her performance in last week’s Coconut Hoops Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

OU’s Sahara Williams added 21 and nine rebounds.

Raegan Beers registered 21 points and 12 rebounds. Beers has now recorded six consecutive double-doubles and leads the nation with seven.

Entering Wednesday night, OU had the nation’s highest-scoring starting five, as its five starters combine to score 71.1 points per game.

Here are three takeaways from the Sooners‘ (8-1) win:

Sooners go cold from deep despite win

OU shot 4 for 22 from 3-point range against the Wolfpack.

The Sooners took bad shots and struggled defensively off misses. Entering Wednesday’s game, Jennie Baranczyk’s group ranked 116th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage.

Chavez knocked down seven 3s against the Seminoles on Sunday, but finished just 3 for 11 in the win.

OU will need to improve its three-point shooting as conference play nears.

OU outrebounded by nine in win

The Sooners struggled mightily on the glass and were outrebounded 57-48 in the win.

Before Wednesday, OU owed a plus-16.4 rebounding margin, which ranked fifth nationally.
