With just two points gained from 14 games so far this season, Wolves could challenge Derby County for the unwanted honour of scoring the fewest points in a single Premier League season.

The Rams picked up just 11 points from a possible 114 across 38 games in the 2007-08 season.

They won one game, drew eight, and lost 29, scoring 20 goals and conceding 89 to finish on a goal difference of -69 in a season to forget at Pride Park.

The other two teams relegated that season, Reading and Birmingham City, finished on 36 and 35 points respectively, with goal differences of -25 and -16.

Derby averaged just 0.29 points per game, while Wolves are currently averaging 0.14 points per match.

With 24 games to go, Wolves are set to finish on just five points if they continue at their current points per game rate.

Opta’s supercomputer has calculated Wolves have a 98.05% chance of finishing in the bottom three by the end of the season, with just a 1.41% probability of finishing 17th and a 0.41% chance of finishing 16th.

There has been a downward trend in minimum points needed to avoid relegation since the Premier League’s inception, as more newly promoted clubs tend to struggle and gain points.

  • Derby County in2007-08 – 11 points
  • Southampton in2024-25 – 12 points
  • Sunderland in2005-06 – 15 points
  • Sheffield United in2023-24 – 16 points
  • Huddersfield Town in2018-19 – 16 points
  • Aston Villa in2015-16 – 17 points

Does being bottom of the table at Christmas mean relegation?

While it is not where teams want to find themselves midway through the season, being at the foot of the table come Christmas does not necessarily spell relegation a few months later.

Four Premier League teams – including Wolves – have defied the odds and climbed back out of the drop zone by the time the season ended.

  • West Brom in 2004-05 – finished 17th
  • Sunderland in 2013-14 – finished 14th
  • Leicester City in 2014-15 – finished 14th
  • Wolves in 2022-23 – finished 13th
