Patrick Mahomes’ recent comments about Travis Kelce have sparked rumors about the latter’s NFL retirement. Kelce, 36, has talked about hanging up his boots previously. However, his quarterback teammate’s remarks hinted that the time may not be too far.
Patrick Mahomes seemingly hints at Travis Kelce’s retirement
The 2025 NFL season is the 13th one in Kelce’s decorated career. The 36-year-old has donned the Chiefs’ red jersey in all of them and delivered multiple noteworthy performances to take his side over the line. However, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend is pretty much in the twilight of his career. As a result, Kelce hinted that he might declare retirement after the 2025 season. (via USA Today)
In a media interaction on November 21, the Chiefs’ tight end said, “It’s one of those things where I’d like to make that decision before they have draft picks and free agency opens and give them an opportunity to go out there and fill the roster appropriately. All of that will be after the season. I won’t be thinking about it until then.”
While Kelce’s comments indicated that declaring retirement after the 2025 season was tentative, Mahomes’ remarks during another media interaction hours ago hinted that the current season will indeed be the 36-year-old’s last one.
Despite being defeated in the last match against Houston Texans, Mahomes initially lauded Kelce’s dedication. However, his latter comments implied that Swift’s partner might hang up his NFL boots after this year.
“He [Kelce] got himself in great shape this year, and he has played great football,” said Mahomes. “He’ll have the option to do whatever he wants to do after this season. But I know one thing, that he’ll give everything he has for the rest of the season.”

While Mahomes appreciated Kelce, in the beginning and the end of his statement, the intermediate line stating Kelce can do “whatever he wants after this season” clearly hints that the Chiefs tight end may not sport the red jersey next season.
However, without Kelce’s official confirmation, it remains to be seen whether he will actually bid the final goodbye to the gridiron after this season.
