Robert Griffin III has enjoyed a successful media career since he last played in the NFL in 2020, working as an analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports and launching a podcast with his wife. But if an NFL team came calling, he’s leaving no doubt about his ability to still spin the ball.
“If someone called me, I could certainly play,” Griffin told FTW. Whether or not he’d actually want to return, however, is another question.
Since news of 44-year-old Philip Rivers’ un-retirement, Griffin has been flooded with calls from people thinking he should receive the same shot. Griffin is just 35 years old, after all, younger than Rivers and other active starters like Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and his old teammate Kirk Cousins.
“I got a bunch of calls actually once Philip Rivers got signed, and guys were asking me, ‘Man, they called him. You’re nine years younger. They should call you,'” Griffin said. “And it’s like, you can call me if you want to. I don’t know if I’m coming over there.”
Part of what makes Rivers’ situation so unique is his familiarity with Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen and the team’s offensive system. According to Griffin, that gives Rivers a chance to thrive in such short notice.
“We might see one of the greatest or worst comebacks of all-time,” Griffin said. “I think it’s a relationship thing. He knows the coach. He knows the offense, and they’re just going to ask him to go out there and not lose the game. That’s kind of how I view it. But I wouldn’t be shocked if he went out there and threw four [touchdowns]. I just wouldn’t be shocked.”
