District 10 wrestling roundup features Corry boys, girls sweep

It’s a transition year for the Corry boys.

Five starters graduated from a group which finished runner-up in the District 10 team championships. That group included three PIAA qualifiers.

Their absence, however, doesn’t mean that the Beavers won’t succeed again in Region 3 and beyond. Reloading is nothing new for this perennial contender.

Corry opened its dual meet schedule with n 60-15 victory Dec. 10 at Union City. Like the year prior, the Region 3 rivals wrestled during a school assembly, trading Corry’s gymnasium for that of the Bears.

Are the Beavers again favorites to win a fourth consecutive region title? Dominance against a growing Union City program provided a good start.

Here’s what else stood out from a busy night of D-10 duals Dec. 10.

Seven falls lead Corry boys

Corry’s Landon VanTassel opened the Beavers’ meet with Union City by logging his first varsity win, a fall at 107 pounds. Six more pins made for a comfortable Corry triumph.

Steven Willis (133 pounds), Jeremiah Johnson (152), Cooper Hodak (160), Devin Merski (172), Lamech Albers (189) and Landon Nickerson (215) each won by fall in the Beavers’ season debut. Their next test will occur Dec. 13 in the STWOA Holiday Classic at Jamestown Community College (New York).

Corry girls beat McLane

The Corry girls opened their home schedule with a 48-24 victory versus General McLane. This followed a Dec. 4 win at Hickory for a group which many consider among this year’s D-10 favorites.

While a transition year for the boys, the 2025-26 season looks like anything but for the Corry girls. They lost no one to graduation, returning two PIAA qualifiers to a roster of 16 athletes which includes just one senior.

Pins by Laikynn Bayle (124), Kody Kuzma (142) and Olivia Krone (155) powered the Beavers’ win over McLane. Six nights prior, Makenna Williams’ 10-7 win by decision at 130 pounds and five early falls helped Corry distance itself from Hickory.

Prep, North East boys grab first Region 4 wins

Cathedral Prep and North East both bounced back from opening night losses to record a Region 4 win.

North East defeated Northwestern, 59-6, behind pins from Kael Kimmy (107), Rocky Kowle (121), Bryson Galloway (127), Pascal Laporte (189) and Logan Latimore (215). Prep beat Girard, 51-17, and Fort LeBoeuf downed Seneca, 46-23.

Reynolds beats Hickory, commands Region 1

Region 1 featured ample drama last season, ending in a three-way tie between Reynolds, Hickory and Grove City.

Reynolds threw the first proverbial punch between these squads Dec. 10, beating Hickory, 50-18, behind six falls. Nico Lomonte (107), Waylon Waite (121), Logan Stewart (127), Greyden Gustas (152), Emery Johnson (189), Colton Tupper (215) and Rocky Floch (285) each pinned their opponent, helping the Raiders run away with a road win.

Reynolds and Grove City will clash Jan. 14. Hickory, after hosting Grove City as part of its upcoming Rande Stottlemyer Memorial Duals, will wrestle its Region 1 meet against the Eagles on Dec. 16.
