Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald is tasked with building his first coaching staff in East Lansing and is making some incredibly important hires for the future of the Spartan football program.
Some people in and around the program would agree that the offensive coordinator hire in East Lansing is the most important hire that Fitzgerald is going to make. In the past decade, the Spartans have been abysmal offensive (with the exceptions of 2017 and 2021). MSU needs to get back to strong offensive performance.
Here at Spartans Wire, we have named five guys that could make sense, and then five more candidates that could be in the mix, but now, there are indications that one guy in particular is standing out.
Nick Sheridan, the co-offensive coordinator and QB coach at Alabama, is a name to lookout for in MSU’s OC search.
Sheridan would be a polarizing hire for Michigan State, as he played his collegiate football as a quarterback at Michigan under Rich Rodriguez, starting as a walk-on before becoming the starting quarterback.
The son of Bill Sheridan, a longtime defensive assistant at both the NFL and college levels, Nick has followed in his father’s footsteps with a coaching career.
RESUME:
- 2011: Western Kentucky (GA)
- 2012: Western Kentucky (PGC/QB)
- 2013: South Florida (PGC/QB)
- 2014–2016: Tennessee (GA)
- 2017–2018: Indiana (QB)
- 2019: Indiana (TE)
- 2020–2021: Indiana (OC/QB)
- 2022–2023: Washington (TE)
- 2024: Alabama (OC/QB)
- 2025–present: Alabama (co-OC/QB)
Coming from the Kalen DeBoer tree, Sheridan has gotten some strong offensive mentoring, and runs a fun offense that Spartan fans would enjoy. He has play calling experience at Indiana in 2020 and 2021, as well as Alabama in 2024.
There is no confirmation that Sheridan is the lead candidate, or set to be hired, but he is a name that Spartan fans should keep their eye on throughout this process.
