What was always expected is now confirmed: quarterback Malik Washington agreed to a deal that will return him to Maryland football in 2026, the team announced Saturday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.
The specifics of Washington’s deal are not public.
The star recruit started immediately for the Terps this season, and was one of the best freshman quarterbacks in the nation. Washington was asked to do a lot — leading the Big Ten in both completions and attempts — finishing the season with 2,963 passing yards, 21 total touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The 6-foot-5, 231-pound quarterback comes back for another year with head coach Michael Locksley, who athletic director Jim Smith has confirmed will lead the team in 2026. Locksley was instrumental in Washington’s recruitment, and retaining the quarterback is likely a big reason he’ll coach an eighth season after back-to-back 4-8 campaigns.
Now eyes turn to star edge rushers and fellow freshmen Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathis. One of the pair may lose a starting job to incoming five-star recruit Zion Elee, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a portal exit — although coaches have asserted they can get all three on the field at once.
