After reaching out to several offensive coordinators, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko ultimately decided to hire from within, promoting wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins to full-time offensive coordinator. Reports indicated that Wiggins was the leading candidate, but Coach Elko still wanted to conduct his due diligence before officially offering him the position.
Wiggins will assume the role at the end of the season when Collin Klein departs for Kansas State. While the decision makes sense from a familiarity standpoint, some argue that a more experienced play-caller might be necessary to elevate the offense to the next level. The primary criticism of Klein was that, although his play designs were strong, his in-game decision-making—particularly in the red zone—was inconsistent. Naturally, this raises questions about whether there will be noticeable improvement in situational play-calling under a first-time offensive coordinator.
At the same time, every coach has to begin somewhere, and Wiggins has been part of several respected coaching staffs, including those led by two-time ACC Coach of the Year Justin Fuente and the legendary Nick Saban at Alabama. There is also speculation that Elko named Wiggins co-offensive coordinator with the understanding that Klein would likely leave if a head coaching opportunity arose, positioning Wiggins as the natural successor regardless of outside opinions.
The announcement of Wiggins’ promotion was met with general enthusiasm, though not without some apprehension. Until he takes the reins in live action, the question of how he will perform remains open. Below are some of the reactions to coach Mike Elko elevating Holmon Wiggins to OC.

Not everyone is a fan
Oh Elko… a person who has never called plays debuting in the SEC in an area outside of Elko’s direct domain. This is where these head coaches start their downnfall. Dumb, very dumb.

Wiggins will have a chance to prove everyone wrong

High risk High reward?
Regarding the promotion of Holmon Wiggins to OC, I really like the attempt to keep continuity on the offensive side of the ball. However, going with a first time play caller feels like a pretty significant risk.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on who we hire as the next QB coach,…

Holmon Wiggins has been one of the better assistant coaches in the nation
Good for Holmon. Was one of VT’s best assistants in the Fuente era. Feel like he’s earned a shot.
