One NBA team is reportedly interested in Marcus Smart

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have as many attractive trade assets as a number of other NBA teams do right now. Forward Rui Hachimura, who is having one of the best seasons of his career, could be somewhat attractive, as could the one future first-round draft pick they’re allowed to send out per league rules. But other than that, the cupboard is somewhat bare as far as tradable assets.

If the Lakers want to successfully pull off a trade that would make them legitimate championship contenders, they will likely need to be more open to moving players other than Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, Dalton Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt. One other man who has gotten some interest on the market from another team, according to insider Jake Fischer, is veteran guard Marcus Smart (h/t Heavy Sports).

“Marcus Smart is another defensive-minded guard whom the [Milwaukee] Bucks have looked at previously, sources say,” Fischer wrote, “but it’s difficult to see the Lakers making him available A) after securing Smart on a favorable deal via the buyout market and B) when they have their own point-of-attack defensive issues.”

Smart has been in and out of the Lakers’ lineup at times this season due to injuries. But when he has been on the court, he has made an impact that has gone beyond his numbers.

He’s averaging 10.3 points on 42.1% field-goal shooting and 30.5% from 3-point range, three assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 27.2 minutes a game. But he’s second on the team with a 7.4 on the court net rating, behind only Kleber, who is averaging 12.1 minutes a game.

Smart is making $5.1 million this season, so he may not have that much value in terms of matching salaries. But it isn’t hard to see how a team looking to take the next step may want to receive him in a trade with Los Angeles.
