H.S. BASKETBALL: Tri-Valley remains undefeated at Marian Catholic

HOMETOWN — Tri-Valley’s boys’ basketball team remained undefeated with a 74-40 win at Marian in a Schuylkill League Division II game on Thursday.

The Bulldogs (6-0; 5-0) forced 11 turnovers in the first half as a Cooper Carl steal and full court layup gave Tri-Valley an early 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter in a rematch of last season’ District 11 Class AA championship game.

“Our defense got them out of their comfort zone and it leads to our offense which was fast paced today,” said Tri-Valley head coach Mike Masser. “Everything we’re working for this season came together.”

Braeden Doyle led Tri-Valley’s offense with 26 points while Trey Porter and Kingsley Johnson each scored 15 points and Gavin Klock added 10 points in the win.

“It helps out a lot being physical and not being afraid to get a shot blocked,” said Doyle. “You’re going to get some calls when you draw contact and when you’re attacking the outside stuff will be open eventually.”

Tri-Valley picked up 15 total turnovers, most of them in the first half, and slowed down Marian (3-4; 1-4) to just four points in the first quarter before outscoring the Colts by 11 points in the second half.

“It’s a big win to start and we’ve still got a lot of games left so we can’t take anyone lightly and Division II is really competitive this year and there’s no easy games,” said Doyle.

Carl got the Bulldogs out to an early lead when he got to the basket for a layup and pair of free throws for the early 7-2 lead.

Trey Porter was up next for Tri-Valley and banked in a layup before hitting a three for the 13-4 lead with a minute left in the first quarter.

“We have guys that can get the ball in the rim and Braeden’s (Doyle) been in the program four years and it’s his third year starting so it’s a great feeling to have a kid like that on the team,” said Masser.

Doyle knocked down a three himself after a turnover and Carl’s layup gave Tri-Valley a 21-4 lead at the end of the first.

Gavin Klock hit a three for the 35-18 lead with two minutes left in the first half. Doyle led the Bulldogs second quarter offensive surge with eight points, including a three, for the 41-18 halftime lead.

“Our goal was to space the floor as much as possible and when we move the ball quick it’s hard for defenses to guard us and hold us to few amount of points,” said Doyle.

Jacob De La Cruz and Greg Tirpak each hit three’s for Marian in the third quarter but couldn’t get within striking distance the rest of the way.

Kingsley Johnson got to the boards for Tri-Valley in the third quarter when he banked in two layups and scored six points. Klock hit a three for the 56-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“We play physical basketball and we’ve got Gavin (Klock) back so it’s an extra guy in the rotation and we pressed at times tonight which I think was effective,” said Masser.

Doyle didn’t slow down in the fourth quarter as he got to the net for nine points while Porter rolled in another four points for the 74-40 final score.

Justin De La Cruz led Marian’s offense with 11 points and Jake Tom had another 10 points.

Marian hosts MMI Preparatory next Friday at 5 p.m. and Tri-Valley hosts Southern Columbia Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
