Rangers complete late comeback, pull out 5-4 win over Flyers in shootout

The Rangers came from behind to beat the Flyers 5-4 in the shootout on Saturday afternoon.

Here are some takeaways…

Artemi Panarin made his presence felt in his return following an illness. The star winger took a feed from Mika Zibanejad off a Philly turnover and buried it to give New York the lead with just 35 seconds left in the opening period. Panarin found the back of the net again in the second, giving him a team-high 13 goals on the season, but other than that the middle frame was completely dominated by the road squad.

Igor Shesterkin struggled mightily after stopping all 13 shots he faced to start the game. He allowed Philly to score three times in a span of 3:35, then gave up another after Panarin cut into the deficit, making it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes. The Flyers were 0-for-16 on the power play in their last seven games heading into the day, but it took them just two shots to score on their first two opportunities in this one.

– There was tons of physicality as expected with a Rangers-Flyers meeting. Brennan Othmann was completely overmatched, but the youngster stood up for himself after taking a rough hit along the boards from Nicholas Deslauries. Deslauries received five minutes for fighting and a two minute boarding penalty.

Mike Sullivan said pregame that Gabe Perreault could be bumped back into the top-six if the team likes his game, so it was certainly an encouraging sign to see him skating up with Vincent Trocheck and J.T. Miller to start the second.

That line combined to help the Blueshirts get back within one midway through the third with some help from a little puck-luck. Trocheck found a juicy rebound and threw it towards the net before it trickled in — Perreault picked up an assist on the play, giving him three points in five games this season.

Scott Morrow had a sloppy turnover that led to Philly’s fourth goal of the game, but Sullivan decided to stick with him on the top power play unit. The young d-man made the head coach’s faith pay off, as he found Mika Zibanejad for a one-time feed to even things up at four with two and a half remaining.

– Shesterkin rebounded nicely to help the Rangers kill off a pair of penalties in overtime, then he stonewalled the Flyers twice after Panarin and Trocheck scored in the shootout, completing the thrilling come-from-behind victory. The star goaltender stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced on the afternoon.
