The New England Patriots played well enough on Sunday to turn one of their biggest skeptics into a believer.
Former NFL MVP and current ESPN commentator Cam Newton went viral over a month ago for calling the Patriots’ incredible regular-season run “fool’s gold.” However, he seems to finally be changing his tune after watching the team erase an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to knock off a desperate Baltimore Ravens team on the road in primetime.
“I’m more higher on the New England Patriots,” Newton admitted on ESPN’s First Take on Monday. “I can hear the comments now, ‘Well keep that same energy about fool’s gold. What all this about Drake Maye?’ We needed to see. When you start to see, week in and week out, how the New England Patriots perform, whether it’s Diggs, whether it’s Hollins…It don’t matter who [it is], they’re taking turns making plays better than any team in football.
“Yes, Drake Maye is the orchestrator. …These things are something that starts to give even me, a known hater to some people’s thought process, like oh, I’m believing in the New England Patriots, and not for reasons for one specific person. It’s a collective that these guys have made in their minds to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to take turns making plays.'”

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but the Patriots dug deep in the end and found a way to get the job done in Baltimore. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye committed two costly turnovers in the first half, but when he needed to be Superman, he arrived just in time for the comeback win.
He finished the game going 31-of-44 passing for 380 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It was a signature win against the same defense that shut out Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals last week.
Perhaps it’s the start for Newton and others coming around to the idea that the Patriots are for real.
