Bengals changes at key position produce results

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to roll out a few changes in the secondary as the season winds down.

The results have started to speak for themselves.

One of those is shifting former first-round pick Dax Hill back to the boundary spot in the last few weeks. He’s playing well there, just like he has in the past before injuries.

The other is giving veteran Jalen Davis some run as a nickel and letting him get in the mix with calls and alignments, which has helped out rookie linebackers Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter.

Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden hit on this topic recently with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“He’s got to make great decisions. That’s what we needed at that point. We needed somebody who’s a veteran there. We couldn’t afford to have another guy that was kind of training on the job, And he really, he really settled us down, allowed the two young guys (linebackers) inside to take that next step, and took a took a chip off the plate of the safeties too.”

The Bengals struggling to find a permanent home for Hill since they initially drafted him as the replacement for Jessie Bates at safety has almost been a running joke for fans. They perplexed some last summer when, after he flashed on the boundary last year, they kicked him back to inside this season.

And here we are now, with Hill on the boundary again and very much looking like a long-term starter, with the breakout DJ Turner taking up the other boundary spot.

As for Davis? He won’t go unchallenged next offseason after the Bengals likely bring him back again. But they just got another reminder of how valuable he can be as a depth piece.
