Tar Heels add size up front with new offensive line commitment

North Carolina lands another commitment from a player in the transfer portal.

Offensive lineman Shaq McRoy committed to North Carolina on Friday. The 6-foot-8, 344-pound redshirt sophomore appeared in six games for Arkansas last season and made one start, logging 58 offensive snaps, mostly at right tackle.

He also brings familiarity with UNC’s staff after playing under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who served as his offensive coordinator and interim head coach with the Razorbacks last year.

McRoy opened his college career at Oregon, redshirting as a freshman in 2024. He has three years of eligibility remaining. The Clay-Chalkville High School product from Pinson, Alabama, was a consensus four-star recruit and an Under Armour All-American.

He now gives North Carolina three offensive line pickups from the transfer portal this offseason, joining Charleston Southern transfer Andrew Threatt and former Baylor lineman Sean Thompkins. Both of those players have two years of eligibility remaining.

North Carolina is overhauling its offensive line. The Tar Heels expect to lose at least eight linemen from the 2025 roster, including regular starters Austin Blaske, Daniel King and Chad Lindbergh, who are set to graduate. That turnover leaves only Eidan Buchanan (one start), Aidan Banfield (four) and Jordan Hall (four) as returning linemen with starting experience next season.

McRoy is from Bessemer, Ala., which is the same hometown of two Heisman Trophy winners Bo Jackson (1985) and Jameis Winston (2013).
