As part of the fun surrounding our 50th anniversary, Golfweek has been enjoying a stroll down Memory Lane with a number of former employees who helped make the brand what it is today.
Today, we’re going way back to chat with a former associate editor who was in charge of Golfweek’s comprehensive scoreboard pages, Brian S. Peterson.
When did you work at Golfweek?
1990-1997
What was your Golfweek title, and give us a brief description of what you did.
I held several different titles through the years, but for the last few years served as associate rditor. I was mostly in charge of the competition section/scoreboard pages. Main beats were college women’s golf, amateur golf, and the LPGA Tour, while also providing coverage of the PGA Tour.
What’s your current title and company?
Web Editor/Outdoor News (currently on a freelance basis)
What’s the one moment you’re proudest of while working with Golfweek?
Putting out the first issue of Golfweek as a national publication in 1990, after it had been known as Florida Golfweek for about 15 years. I was hired as the news editor a week earlier, so it was my first issue as a staff member with Golfweek.
What’s the ‘hair-on-fire’ moment you remember most vividly?
Putting out the first issue after we had moved from Winter Haven to Orlando. We had people and resources in Winter Haven and in Orlando. And this was before the internet, cellphones, etc. We made deadline and the issue looked fine, but I remember it being crazy, especially in production.
What’s your favorite golf course you’ve played and why?
Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes, Minn. As a historic lakeside resort course, it had a great vibe. And the course was always in excellent shape. Challenging but also a feel-good layout. Also a great venue for a golf journalist: It hosted the highly-regarded Pine To Palm Amateur, which I covered in the early 2000s, after leaving Golfweek and returning to my home state (at least temporarily).
(Editor’s note: We appreciate all the former employees who have contributed time and effort to this feature. The golf journalism community is a small one and we’re proud of the achievements of all our former colleagues.)
