Texas A&M softball is just 25 days from first pitch, and year three of the Trisha Ford era brings one of the deepest blends of experience and young talent she’s had in College Station. Competition for playing time will be fierce across the board, but no position battle looms larger than the one behind the plate.
One newcomer already drawing national attention is former four‑star prospect Maddie Sauni, ranked No. 25 overall and the No. 5 catcher in her class. D1Softball tabbed her as one of its 100 Freshmen to Watch, and early indications suggest she’ll factor into the Aggies’ plans sooner rather than later.
Catcher was a revolving door last season after starter Olivia Johnson suffered a season‑ending injury. That left Grace Coleman and DeeDee Baldwin to split duties, and while both were steady defensively, offensive production lagged — each finished the year hitting below .215. The lack of punch forced Coach Ford to slide designated hitter Mac Barbara behind the plate at times simply to generate more offense.
That’s where Sauni changes the equation. She’s not only a polished receiver with advanced defensive instincts, but she also brings legitimate power and run‑production ability to a lineup that needs it from the catcher spot. During fall ball, she flashed that bat repeatedly, driving balls with authority and showing the kind of presence that stands out immediately. And perhaps just as important for a catcher, she carries a natural leadership personality that teammates gravitate toward.
The battle for the starting job will continue well into the early portion of the season, and Ford has never been shy about using a rotation until roles solidify. But whether she wins the job outright or forces her way into a timeshare, Sauni is going to be on the field. Her talent, versatility, and offensive upside are simply too valuable to keep off the lineup card.
