Just glad to see smiles on faces – Vale boss Brady

New Port Vale boss Jon Brady wants to see more control and discipline from his side after overseeing victory in his first game in charge.

Brady has a big job on his hands at his new club, with Vale sitting bottom of League One, 11 points adrift of safety.

But they continued their good knockout form this season as they beat Fleetwood in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday.

“Overall, really positive, we’re into the next round, so that’s great for this football club,” he told BBC Radio Stoke.

“Just a little discipline [needs to improve] in moments, winning our duels, we’ve got to win more duels, got to be stronger in those moments.

“I think they’re so keen to win the ball, and sometimes they’re trying to win it the wrong side and get rolled, but I think it’s just because they want it so bad.

“We want to get the discipline and the good habits in them, but I feel we’ve got a really good group, a really positive group, and I’m just glad to see smiles on faces.”

The new boss said he has “loved every minute” since replacing Darren Moore last week, but outlined areas to improve in attack.

Finding the net has been Vale’s chief problem this season, with just 18 goals in 23 league games this season – the fewest in the division.

“I’d like us to have more control in that final third,” Brady said.

“Some of the chances we created were really good, but can we sustain the attack in that final third, instead of the ball waving up and down?

“But we’ve had a day, really, to work with them.”

Port Vale travel to Bolton in the third round of the EFL Vertu Trophy on Tuesday (19:00 GMT) before returning to league action at Mansfield Town on Saturday (15:00 GMT).
