USC basketball star JuJu Watkins can add another accolade to her growing list of accomplishments.
Watkins made history Friday night when she became the first athlete at Sierra Canyon High School to have their jersey retired.
“It’s a full circle moment, and I’m just happy to be here,” Watkins told Eyewitness News during her return to the Chatsworth school.
The Watts native was presented with a framed No. 12 jersey at halftime during a boys basketball game between Sierra Canyon and Sherman Oak’s Notre Dame High.
“I only spent two years here, but they welcomed me with open arms, from an education standpoint and also basketball,” she said. “I don’t know where I’d be without them.”
While at Sierra Canyon, Watkins was named Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year and scored 60 points on senior night. She has gone on to achieve more success at USC.
Former coaches at the ceremony praised Watkins for who she is off the court.
“Everything about her is absolutely amazing, which took part in the decision for her to be the first person (to have their jersey retired). It wasn’t just athletic based,” Watkins’ former coach Alicia Komaki said. “It was character driven, it was how she was as a student here. But her resume as an athlete is pretty exceptional that it was hard to deny any of the above.”
Watkins is sidelined for the season as she continues to rehab from a torn ACL suffered last March.
Several professional basketball players have played for Sierra Canyon, including NBA players Bronny James and Scotty Pippen Jr., as well as WNBA star Kennedy Burke.
