Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 have only been out for a couple of months, but there have already been several firmware updates to iron out early performance issues. Just last month, we got version 8B30, and now Apple has pushed version 8B34 to all users.
As usual, Apple didn’t supply any specific release notes for what the update does, only that it includes “bug fixes and other improvements.” However, since no other AirPods model received a firmware update, it appears to target a specific flaw in AirPods Pro 3.
Some users have complained about ANC allowing ambient noise to creep in while listening, and at least one user on the MacRumors forum reports that the issue has been fixed: “Months after buying two sets of AirPods Pro 3, the ANC is finally working consistently. Yay!” Other users have experienced issues with a high-pitched sound coming from their buds, but it’s unclear whether this update addresses that.
There’s no way to manually force an update to your AirPods, though you can check to see when the update begins. To make sure they receive the update, put them in their charging case, plug it in, and wait for the update to install. To see if your AirPods have the latest firmware, head over to the Settings app, tap General > About > AirPods, and check the firmware version.
