Mats Wilander thinks Roger Federer would be the perfect coach for Carlos Alcaraz for one key reason.
Mats Wilander believes Roger Federer would be the ideal figure to guide Carlos Alcaraz into the next stage of his career.
The former world No. 1 said the Swiss legend’s experience and playing style could give the Spaniard a fresh perspective following his recent coaching change.
Mats Wilander says Roger Federer could help refine Carlos Alcaraz’s weaknesses
Speaking about Carlos Alcaraz’s split from Juan Carlos Ferrero, Mats Wilander said the 21-year-old should look for a coach with a Grand Slam pedigree.
He believes Roger Federer’s influence would give Alcaraz something new to build on and give him a major winning edge.
“If you’re going to have another Grand Slam voice in mind, that voice should come from a player with a different style,” Wilander said.
“If you take Roger Federer, for example, now we’re talking about someone who could really help Carlos Alcaraz with the part of his game he’s not so comfortable with,” Wilander said. “And I think Roger Federer would be the perfect coach for Carlos Alcaraz.”
Wilander compared Federer’s approach with John McEnroe’s. He pointed out that Alcaraz would benefit from working with someone whose mindset and tactical perspective differ from his own.
“When you talk about Murray and Carlos Alcaraz, there’s a similarity in their playing style,” he said. “But if you take John McEnroe and then Carlos Alcaraz, you suddenly see a big difference.”
Carlos Alcaraz starts new chapter under Samuel Lopez
Carlos Alcaraz split with Juan Carlos Ferrero last month after another successful season that saw him win two Grand Slam titles.
The six-time major champion announced that Samuel Lopez will join his team for the Australian Open, his first major event with a new setup.
The Spaniard recently faced Jannik Sinner in an exhibition match in South Korea, winning 7–5, 7–6 in straight sets.
The result offered a positive start to the new partnership ahead of the first Slam of the year, where Alcaraz will try to claim the only major missing from his collection.
For Alcaraz, the prospect of guidance from one of the game’s greatest champions remains a fascinating what-if for the future.
