Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has been in the headlines following the team’s improbable comeback win over the rival Green Bay Packers in the wild-card playoffs. And, for some insane reason, some of the NFL world is painting Johnson out to be a villain.
To recap: Following Chicago’s win over Green Bay, Johnson had a drive-by handshake with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, which isn’t unlike the first handshake between the pair back in Week 14 when LaFleur did the same. This after the Packers did a lot of talking in the week leading up to the game. Then, in the postgame locker room, Johnson opened his speech to the team with a “F— the Packers…I f—ing hate those guys,” which drew a raucous response from his team and Bears fans alike but some criticism from talking heads.
With Chicago just a couple of days away from their biggest game in the last decade-plus for a trip to the NFC Championship, the talk isn’t centered around the Bears hosting the Rams at what’s going to be a frigid, snowy and windy Soldier Field. No, the talk is still about Johnson’s behavior following the game.
Earlier this week, Johnson stood by his comments noting “there’s a rivalry that exists between these two teams” and it’s something he understands. But he made it clear “I don’t like that team.”
Perhaps it was Johnson doubling down on his comments, or that the Bears are 3-1 against the Packers in their last four games, that has angered many. But it’s a bit hypocritical considering the past between these two teams. When Green Bay was dominating Chicago in a one-sided rivalry, no one batted an eye when Aaron Rodgers is yelling at fans “I still f—ing own you” or when Clay Matthews came out at the 2025 NFL Draft with a piece of paper that said “Bears still suck.” In fact, they were celebrating it. It’s all part of the rivalry, they said.
But suddenly Johnson’s comments following the franchise’s biggest win in the last two decades has made him the villain, and apparently his behavior has angered coaches from the Sean McVay tree, where LaFleur originates. And the question is why?
Rodgers’ comments and Matthews’ actions are all part of the rivalry, but they also happened when the Bears were a bad team. Now that they’re ascending with Johnson at the helm, and taking their rightful shots, people suddenly have a problem with competitiveness in a rivalry.
But if it’s the villain role that Johnson and the Bears have to assume, that’s fine by them. After all, this Bears team has done an excellent job proving critics wrong and succeeding despite what everyone has said about them all year. Even better, they’re only considered the villain because they’re suddenly perceived as a threat in the NFC. And, with Johnson leading the charge, that’s not going to change anytime soon.
Bears fans are embracing Ben Johnson as the villain
The NFL is as cutthroat as cutthroat gets. It’s a violent sport that requires unbridled aggression and fearlessness just to entertain the **thought** of being good.
Chicago is less than a week removed from one of its most significant victories in the Super Bowl era from a team…

It’s amazing how much Ben Johnson can deflect any sort of attention from his players. He’s been the guy getting all the shots all week long while his players fly under the radar preparing for the Rams.
That’s not by accident. https://t.co/hZWwTYIGic

Ben Johnson becoming a villain is something the city of Chicago is going to absolutely embrace like crazy https://t.co/71nSnuwJ7P

grown men crying over a handshake and the f word is hilarious to me.
I didn’t know the Sean McVay tree was a weeping willow. https://t.co/JL5QbJ06vQ

I do not understand what Ben Johnson did that was so bad. He spoke to HIS team in HIS locker room, what’s the issue. Whatever happened to rivalries? It was easy for people to crap on the Bears when they sucked, now they can fight back and it’s a problem? https://t.co/mfV7EL3fXi

I don’t think Ben Johnson could have scripted a better development for his team’s unity and motivation this weekend.
“Us against the world” is exactly the mentality you want in the locker room right now https://t.co/JKdLBbNf0f

you’d think Ben Johnson threw a box of puppies into oncoming traffic with some of these reactions 😂 https://t.co/L1ghVZ2iEz

we getting soft. it was a playoff game against a division rival in which they came back from down three scores. he was supposed to be turnt up regardless. add in whatever their personal beef they have & it makes even more sense.
COMPETE. https://t.co/HNSaoBIbL6

There are literally 4 total HC’s in the McVay tree and Ben already beat 3 of them in year one. Not a clean sweep only because he hasn’t opposed Coen yet.#Bearshttps://t.co/yrRL1qEOj9pic.twitter.com/3VsmKSMeMZ

Ohhhhhh nooooo!!!! The football coaches don’t like each other… oh no!!!
It’s professional football… they aren’t supposed to like each other. If the Bears win on Sunday, I hope Ben MFs Sean McVay too.
Football hate is fun. Sorry. https://t.co/CPJx7EhoYxpic.twitter.com/gZNEg5KnAE

Ben Johnson already Deebo’d Matt LaFleur and the Packers. If he whoop up on Matt’s friend and brother, then stamp him as a Bears legend immediately. https://t.co/sjJsKiphTBpic.twitter.com/uNtOVJBQ7o

If the ‘McVay Tree’ is really that pissed off about this, I hope Ben Johnson beats them by 30 on Sunday. It’s professional sports, and they are upset about a rivalry? Everyone doesn’t have to be friends https://t.co/kbVCx4ynXM

Ben Johnson:
– Didn’t hire any of his friends to be part of his staff
– Called out Matt LaFleur in his opening presser
– Doubled down on “FTP” by saying “it needs to be a rivalry”It’s awesome. And his players and coaches love it. That’s all that matters. https://t.co/7Zlb7cBV8I
