3 thoughts on the Steelers potential HC candidates

In just four days since Mike Tomlin stepped down as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, the front office has wasted no time in rounding up potential replacements. While some teams that fired their head coaches some time ago are still searching, Pittsburgh has requested eight interviews, with the first coming on Friday.

Here is the full rundown of all the interview requests as of Friday night.

  • Rams Pass Game Coordinator Nate Scheelhaase (Friday interview)
  • Rams DC Chris Shula (Friday Interview)
  • Packers DC Jeff Hafley (Friday Interview)
  • Chargers DC Jesse Minter (Saturday Interview)
  • Vikings DC Brian Flores
  • Dolpins DC Anthony Weaver
  • Panthers DC Ejiro Evero
  • #49ers OC Klay Kubiak

Here are three big takeaways from the requests so far.

Defense on the brain

After 19 years of Tomlin, it was only natural that ownership and the front office would look to defensive-minded candidates. So having six of the eight interviews be current defensive coordinators makes sense.

Considering offense an afterthought

Only having two offensive-minded coaches is somewhat frustrating but we hope whoever get the job will revamp the offense via a new offensive coordinator if they want to fix the Steelers biggest problem.

Avoiding the recycled coaches

There are several veteran former head coaches on the market and it is refreshing to see the Steelers are avoiding them at all costs. Even offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who has head coaching experience, isn’t considered a candidate. The team is looking for a reset among the coaching staff, top to bottom.
