Hill triple double in Pike's County win, sets up showdown with Lawrence North

With each blocked shot, Isaiah Hill’s smile grew wider.

By the end of the first half of Friday night’s Marion County Tournament semifinal against Lawrence Central, the Pike 6-11 junior had 10 blocked shots – and plenty of smiles.

“They just kept going up on me,” Hill said.

He kept swatting them away, finishing with a triple double. Hill’s 14 points, 10 rebounds and 13 blocked shots led the way in Class 4A No. 5 Pike’s 91-53 win over Lawrence Central.

“Special player, special talent,” Pike coach Jeff Teague said of Hill. “He’s at the very beginning (of realizing his talent). He has so much more room to grow as a player. He’s at the beginning but right now but he’s off to a really good start. He’s a really good player. That’s the exciting thing about him and I think a lot of colleges see that. I’m excited to see him grow.”

Pike’s win in the second semifinal sets up a tantalizing matchup in Saturday’s championship at Southport Fieldhouse for the county championship. The Red Devils (12-2) will play 4A sixth-ranked Lawrence North (13-1) at 7 p.m. The Wildcats got out to a strong start, leading by 17 points at halftime, then held off Park Tudor in the second half for a 61-48 win.

Lawrence North put four players in double figures with Cam Webster’s 16 points leading the way. Duke Karnes added 14 points, Brennan Miller scored eight of his 12 in a pivotal second quarter and Davis Baker had 10 points.

“We’ll have to a much better job in half court offense (on Saturday),” Lawrence North coach Chris Giffin said. “But we’ve done a nice job being balanced. We have four guys averaging (double figures) and a couple more in the 7 or 8 range. It makes it hard to guard people and zone in on one guy.”

Lawrence North and Pike, rivals in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, have not met this season. That will happen on Feb. 20 at Lawrence North. The stakes will be high on Saturday night. Pike has not won a county title since winning three in a row from 2015-17. Lawrence North is seeking its fourth title since 2020 and second in three years.

“It’s four games in five days and almost always those games by and large are competitive,” Giffin said. “Even the double digit margin games, like tonight, you don’t feel comfortable utilizing the bench that much. So you have guys with wear and tear and attrition. And other than the state tournament, I think this is the best tournament in the state. Generally speaking, it’s a grind.”

Park Tudor (8-4) was led by 14 points from Keylan Smith and 13 from Carlos Lopez.

Pike played with intensity and urgency against a Lawrence Central team that was coming off a 71-69 win over Ben Davis on Wednesday. But the Bears (6-8) fell into a 14-point hole by the end of the first quarter and trailed by as many as 21 in the first half, shooting just 9-for-35 from the field by halftime.

Jahari Miller led Pike with 18 points. T.J. Davis (16 points, five assists), Landon Lampley (14 points 10 rebounds), Kenneth Lampley (12 points, eight rebounds) and Bo Washington (10 points) joined Hill in double figures.

“We have a good group of guys, and they all play for one another,” Teague said. “These are the results we can get, but we have to continue to try to build on that. We’ll have a good test (on Saturday). This is a great tournament. You play all quality teams, and we have a chance to play some really good basketball. That’s all you can ask for. It’s always fun to be a part of the county and to have a chance to win one would be pretty cool.”
