It was all the makings of another Cardiac Bears win. The Bears had the Rams exactly where they wanted them, but they just could not finish this game late in overtime. The Bears took a great team to the brink of an upset, and they could have won this game by multiple possessions had they not made so many mistakes. It hurts in the present moment but is an encouraging development for the future. This Bears team is very close to contention at the end of the first season of a new era.
Here are how my expectations for Caleb Williams and the Bears in their divisional round match played out:
Caleb Williams outplays Matthew Stafford
“Last week, Jordan Love played a perfect game, and he still was outplayed by Caleb Williams, who did not get going until the second half. Now, Stafford is looked at like the best quarterback in the NFC and a top quarterback in the NFL. He is having a season where he deserves the MVP award. I think Caleb Williams will outplay him. Williams has proven he can be lights out still in the cold and make every throw, even with the wind. I think the cold will lessen Stafford’s production just a tad, and Caleb will win a shootout. Both quarterbacks’ defenses will give up a lot, but I think Caleb Williams takes more advantage of the Rams’ defense than Stafford does vs the Bears. Another category Caleb will beat Stafford in is turnovers. I think the Bears get Stafford on one poor decision, and Caleb plays a clean, efficient game.”
Caleb Williams was special once again down the stretch, and I think he did, at moments, look better than Stafford. Unfortunately, the 3 interceptions are what gave the nod to Stafford in this one. If Caleb Williams had just one fewer interception, the Bears would have won that football game, so that was a very crucial reason for the Bears coming up short.
Bears’ playmakers will have the bigger game
“The Rams have the best receiver in the game in Puka Nacua and an unstoppable threat in the red zone in Davante Adams. Both guys will create problems for the Bears’ secondary. With the Bears’ weapons now being fully healthy, I think they put up a bigger game as a collective group. I think there will be another 100-yard game by Colstelon Loveland, who should feast on the Rams’ linebackers. D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, and Luther Burden all had at least 40 yards receiving last week. Caleb spread the ball out to each of his playmakers, and I think he will do that again. I think instead D.J. Moore touches 100 yards receiving too with Loveland, as he has a couple of big plays where he torches the Rams’ secondary.”
It was an even game between both sides, and down the stretch, the Rams’ playmakers were better. A lot of times in this game, there were miscommunications between Caleb and his weapons that caused some interceptions. The Bears players also had an insane number of drops that were big-time opportunities. That was an underlying factor in this one too as well, the Bears playmakers could not capitalize on Caleb Williams’ great throws.
Bears’ run game shows up
“The Bears already have the cold as an advantage; if their run game can get going, it will be a nightmare game for the Rams’ defense. The Bears’ run game has not been as much of an advantage as of late, but when the Eagles beat the Rams in last year’s playoffs, they had both the cold and their run game going for them. I think D’Andre Swift or Kyle Monangai has 100 yards on the ground, and the other one has 50 yards on the ground to be a great compliment. The Bears will prove in this game that they have the better running back duo as they outgain the Rams duo big time.”
The Bears’ run game could have been more effective, but it felt like Ben Johnson leaned more towards the passing attack to try to win this football game. The Bears had more total yards on the ground in this one, but Kyren Williams felt like more of the dominant running back. Williams ran for 87 yards and had two touchdowns. He took the pressure off of Stafford, and the Rams’ offense was able to have success because of Williams. It did not feel like that for the Bears.
The Bears’ pass rush will be a factor in this game
“While the Bears’ pass rush has not been the most consistent, they still have been effective when it needs to be. Last week, in the second half against the Packers, both Austin Booker and Montez Sweat were wreaking havoc in the Packers’ backfield. Austin Booker finished with a sack, and Sweat had 6 pressures. I think both will come up big late in this game and make Matthew Stafford feel their presence. With the cold being a huge factor in this game they last thing a quarterback wants is to get hit too. I think Sweat sacks Stafford on the last drive of the game with the help of Booker, forcing the Rams to settle for 3 points instead of a touchdown. That will set up another Cardiac Bears big moment.”
This was a great performance by the defense, and they consistently got after Matthew Stafford. By the end of the first half, this team had 3 sacks. The pressure simply rattled Stafford, and he looked far from an MVP candidate. Dennis Allen did a great job designing blitzes that worked to perfection, but Montez Sweat and Austin Booker did a great job creating pressure on their own. The pressure defensively helped the Bears limit the production of the Rams’ playmakers, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.
The Cardiac Bears do it again
“Caleb Williams and the Bears cannot win another football game with another impressive comeback, as the matchups get tougher in this year’s playoffs. I do think, though, this game will be very similar to last week’s game for the Rams against the Panthers. It will come down to the last drive of the game, and whoever gets the ball last will win this game. I think that will be the Chicago Bears, and after many lead changes and ties, Caleb Williams continues his great year with one more game-winning drive. I think Caleb Williams and D.J. Moore deliver the game-winner one more time.”
The Cardiac Bears did do it again. Caleb Williams threw an amazing all-time passing touchdown to Cole Kmet to tie this game in the 4th quarter late. All hope felt lost until Caleb Williams brought out some magic again. This game went to overtime, and the Bears had all the momentum in the world, but one mistake, as they were 15 minutes away from a winning score, cost the Bears everything. The Cardiac Bears had their momentum, but they couldn’t finish the job because of a late overtime.
