NFL Network Tom Pelissero broke some huge Pittsburgh Steelers news on Saturday when he reported the Steelers are working to sign former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to be their next head coach. The Steelers have had multiple interviews for their head coaching vacancy after Mike Tomlin stepped down two weeks ago. Here are our quick takeaways from the news.
It might mean the return of Aaron Rodgers
The end of Aaron Rodgers time with the Packers wasn’t great but this doesn’t mean Rodgers and McCarthy can’t mend fences and come together for another run. Rodgers is set to hit free agency and without Tomlin, McCarthy is the Steelers best shot to get him back.
McCarthy’s experience helps speed a rebuild
With the quarterback being the biggest issue to consider, having McCarthy would expedite the rebuild, and he has a strong reputation for developing young quarterbacks. Might be the best case scenario for Will Howard heading into his second season.
Reputation could lure in free agents
Pittsburgh has some serious roster holes, money to spend and plenty of guys who could be cap casualties. Having McCarthy as opposed to a less-known coach might help lure in veteran free agents and keep this team competitive.
This breaks from tradition
The Steelers have only had three head coaches since 1969, but none of them came in with the level of experience, which leads us to believe this is more of a bridge head coach as opposed to a guy to keep long term. Keep an eye on who McCarthy hires as his coordinators to see if some of that is future building.
