PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have a roster decision to make as they move forward with their season. Both Dominick Barlow and Jabari Walker, key pieces to coach Nick Nurse’s rotation, both saw their two-way days expire on their current deals.
Normally, a two-way player is able to have 50 days on an active NBA roster, but due to the “Under-Fifteen Game” rule for teams carrying fewer than 15 players on standard contracts, two-way players can be active for a total of only 90 games, per ESPN. Barlow, Walker, and recently waived Hunter Sallis have played a combined 90 games this season on two-way deals.
Barlow has started 29 of the 34 games he’s played after Saturday’s 112-109 loss to the New York Knicks. One has to believe he will be converted, but he isn’t concerned about that. He will let his agent and President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey figure that out.
“I mean, I don’t really ask those type of questions,” Barlow said after the loss. “I would like to think so. That’s for my agent and Daryl. They can all handle that kind of stuff. My goal is to be a great basketball player today, and be a great basketball player tomorrow, and anything that happens in the future, see what happens. I try not to ask too many questions about that kind of stuff. I’ve been in this situation before. It doesn’t really do anything for you, besides just make you think. I’ve kind of just been enjoying the day.”
Barlow has the right mindset towards his situation. He is a true professional and is looking to just keep pushing forward in an effort to be the best player he can be on a daily basis. Also, he is taking the positive mindset as he moves forward with his journey.
“You play basketball for a living, and after that, you kind of get to go home and chill and do whatever you want,” Barlow said. “So, there’s challenges, but it’s not the hardest life in the world. So, I think kind of just being appreciative, being able to wake up, and do something that you really enjoy and love kind of helps with that. So, I try not to feel sorry for myself at points like that. Just understanding I’m in the NBA, playing, helping my team in a good environment. So why do you even think about that kind of stuff?”
It remains to be seen if Barlow will be in a Sixers uniform when they take on the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night, but one has to believe they will work something out.
