It’s always tricky to summarise games like Saturday’s. On one hand we showed character to come back and get something from the game, while on the other, after going 1-0 up it’s frustrating that we even found ourselves in a losing position.
This is a team still very much evolving, and performances like this will not be uncommon, I’m sure. As frustrating as that is, it’s also just the situation we’re in as a team right now.
Here’s how the fans reacted to another opinion-splitting afternoon…
New signings
Optimism among the Loyal Royals was given a needed boost in the run-up to Saturday’s Louisiana Day at the SCL, with Haydon Roberts and Ryan Nyambe signing.
And it wasn’t long until we got to see the two of them making a real impact in the blue and white hoops, with the former bagging his first goal and the latter providing an assist for Marriott’s equaliser.
First impressions are always important, and they made decent ones it seems…
Definitely the hallmarks of a midtable team, but fair play the signings looked good today – involved in both goals #readingfc

Quality signing already, same for Nyambe, serious impact. #readingfchttps://t.co/61vrzykuyK

We need more characters like Nyambe who will take personal responsibility for grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck & making positive things happen. Far too few of those characters in our squad at present. #readingfc

Nyambe is good #readingfc

Haydon Roberts looks like a good signing! #ReadingFC 👏🦁

Hayden Roberts very good on Debut, looks to be a great addition on the first showing. Also don’t think Dorsett did badly in the centre of defence today either #readingfc

Jack Marriott
While Roberts and Nyambe were making their first impressions, this man proved his importance to the team yet again.
It was a signing that raised a few eyebrows and had some debating his quality, but there’s nobody doubting his ability now. He’s a natural goalscorer, and they are priceless at this level.
Marriott again, ole, ole…
What can you say about Marriott, his goalscoring record since joining is fantastic. A couple of games this coming week where we need to take points now #readingfc

An opinion-splitting performance
I think the general feeling at the moment, for me anyway, is that we are a team in transition. Yes, I detest that phrase as much as you do, but that is our reality right now.
We will have good times and not so good times, but it will take time to find a real level of consistency. Again, Saturday’s performance was one that left fans wanting more, while also praising some clear positives…
Point better than nothing but disappointing defensive performance today cost us! Need Ryan and Derek in that back four! And not winning our home games has put to bed any talk of playoffs this season! Green shots and definitely a work in progress season! #readingfchttps://t.co/0G922Yocxg

Unlucky to get a draw, deserved a win
✅️ Haydon Roberts debut goal and great performance from left back
✅️ Paddy Lane back and finding fitness
✅️ Showed character to get a late equaliserOn to Exeter (h)#readingfc#barnsleyfc

Largely dull game and not a great performance. Had moments but so did Barnsley. Little or no urgency until the last 10.
But this team is still forming. We do not need big changes to the squad. This lot need time and tweaks. #readingfc— Philip (@Philip344072728) January 24, 2026

Shame about the defending for the 2nd goal, but we dug in and got the draw. Some negatives but by God a lot of positives, new signings making instant impacts, heads didn’t drop and a manager willing to go for it.@RCouhig We won’t back down

Frustrating game that controlled large parts without creating enough big chances Subs changed the game when they came on but probably came on a little bit late thought the new signings were good on to Tuesday and Exeter #readingfchttps://t.co/vg0zq54MIa

We’ve played worse and won this season. Little bit frustrating not to win but the new full backs look good! #ReadingFC

Conclusion
There are green shoots, that’s for sure, but it will take time for those to turn into real, solid, consistent foundations.
I for one am a lot more confident with Leam Richardson in charge. The football hasn’t been glamorous by any stretch, and results haven’t been perfect, but I’m starting to see a direction – and it’s a positive one.
Next up, Exeter City at home on Tuesday. URZ!
