The NFL is the ultimate arms race, and you can never have enough good quarterbacks. The Eagles have a factory, and Tanner McKee could again be the most valuable asset heading into the 2026 free agency and NFL draft frenzy. Nearly one year ago today, McKee was thrust into the spotlight, and he delivered on the moment, making himself one of the hottest commodities. Jalen Hurts is the unquestioned start, and he’ll again have a new offensive coordinator after the Eagles fired Kevin Patullo.
With the off-season underway, we’re reviewing the Eagles’ quarterback position ahead of the new league year.
Jalen Hurts
In 2025, Hurts was 294-454 passing (64.8%), throwing for 3,224 yards and a 25:6 TD: INT ratio to go with 421 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in 16 regular-season games. Hurts ranked 6th in the NFL in total touchdowns (33), behind Matthew Stafford (46), Josh Allen (39), Trevor Lawrence (38), Drake Maye (35), and Jared Goff (34). Hurts joined elite company this season, and he is one of only five quarterbacks since 2000 to post 30+ total touchdowns in four straight seasons, joining Drew Brees (2008-16), Allen (2020-25), Aaron Rodgers (2008-12), and Russell Wilson 2017-20).
The Eagles could look to sign the quarterback to a contract extension.
At an average annual salary of $51 million a year, Hurts is the first quarterback to make over $50 million in a season and win the Super Bowl. The previous record belonged to Patrick Mahomes, who averages $45 million per season with the Kansas City Chiefs (Mahomes won the two previous Super Bowls before Hurts). Hurts ranked 6th in the NFL in total TDs (33), and he is one of only five QBs since 2000 to post 30+ total TDs in four straight seasons, joining Drew Brees (2008-16), Allen (2020-25), Aaron Rodgers (2008-12), and Russell Wilson 2017-20). The Eagles quarterback is entering the third year of the five-year, $255 million deal Hurts signed prior to the 2023 season, and his $51.5 million salary is guaranteed for 2026 as he’ll count $31,971,800 against the cap with a September 1 option bonus looming. This season will be the final year of guaranteed money, and his cap hit will rise to $42,132,800 in 2027 and $47,541,000 in 2028, according to Over The Cap.
Tanner McKee
A 2023 sixth-round pick out of Stanford, McKee is patiently waiting for his moment to be a starter. The former sixth-round pick started the season finale with the opportunity to help Philadelphia move into the No. 2 seed with a Bears loss to the Packers. McKee was 21-40 passing, one touchdown, one interception, and a 68.9 rating, a far cry from his 2024 debut.
With an uncertain off-season for several NFL teams, he will be a trade prospect to watch.
Sam Howell
In a move that was supposed to provide insurance for Tanner McKee, the Eagles traded for Vikings quarterback Sam Howell. The Howell trade came hours after former Eagles second overall pick, Carson Wentz, worked out for Minnesota ahead of the roster cuts. The fourth-year QB didn’t play any regular-season snaps.
