On Tuesday, new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy delivered an emotional speech to the media about his hiring and his return to Pittsburgh. We are hopeful the critics of this hire will be proven wrong and this team can finally get over the playoff hump and bring some glory back to the Steelers. Here are our big takeaways from the press conference
Mike McCarthy really loves Pittsburgh
McCarthy is a yinzer through and through, and this came out in his statement to the press. This hire feels like a dream come true for McCarthy, and there’s no doubt he’s going to do his best to make this team into a winner. If the Steelers don’t win, it won’t be because McCarthy didn’t do his best.
The 3-4 defense is staying
McCarthy switched to a 3-4 defense in 2018 in Green Bay in part because of the Steelers, so he has no plans to switch back to a 4-3 anytime soon. This isn’t to say something can’t change over the next three months, but for now, it sounds like McCarthy wants to leave the defense in place, which would shape his decision for his defensive coordinator.
He’s in it for the long haul
The hire of McCarthy might have been viewed as a short-term fix but it doesn’t sound like that coming from him. McCarthy is committed to winning a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh and despite being 62 years old doesn’t sound like a man who is going to walk away until the job is done.
