Pair of Winnacunnet athletes win Seacoast Athletes of the Week

The Seacoast high school Athletes of the Week for Jan. 19-24 are Winnacunnet High School boys hockey player Logan Muirhead and Winnacunnet basketball player Julie Allan.

Allan joins previous girls winners this winter: Newmarket High School girls basketball player Amaya Beckles, Marshwood High School basketball player Isabelle Tice, Exeter High School cross country athlete Lexi Paterna, Dover High School basketball player Avery Littlefield and Winnacunnet High School swimmer Makenna Babineau.

Muirhead joins previous boys winner this winter: Somersworth boys basketball player Jackson Gregoire, Oyster River High School hockey player Nolan Walsh, Oyster River High School boys basketball players Will Jernigan, Dover High School basketball player Michael Gorman and Marshwood/Traip wrestler Rogan Boisvert.

York County College presents the Seacoast high school Athletes of the Week.

The weekly polls run each Monday through midnight Thursday, and can be found at seacoastonline.com/sports and fosters.com/sports. The honors are presented by York County Community College.

Allan won the online poll by receiving over 31% of the votes, totaling 477. Portsmouth track athlete Ginger Vinciguerra finished second with over 29%.

Exeter hockey player Maddy Mann had nearly 18%, Oyster River/Portsmouth hockey player Sienna Metcalf had over 15% and Spaulding basketball player Damiya Perkins had over 6%, to round out the five nominees.

Allan scored 14 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Warriors’ defeated Seacoast rival Dover, 52-43 in a Division I game on Friday, Jan. 23. Allan also scored 10 points in a 58-38 loss to Nashua North on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

“Huge congratulations to Julie on being named Athlete of the Week. Individual awards are always special, but this one also speaks to the growth of our program,” Winnacunnet head coach Brian Gray said. “Julie’s success is a direct result of great team play, teammates moving the ball, making the extra pass and putting each other in positions to succeed. She scores off assists, trust and unselfish basketball. As we continue to rise up, it’s exciting to see the media and our fans take notice of the work this group is putting in together.”

Muirhead won the online poll by receiving more than 32% of the votes, totaling 852. Dover hockey player Lucas Grigas finished with nearly 30%.

Portsmouth unified basketball player Luke Lawrence-Adams had over 25%, Exeter hockey player Evan Couture had over 8% and Winnacunnet track athlete Owen Janetos had over 4%, to round out the five nominees.

Muirhead recorded 24 saves for the Warriors’ in a 5-2 win over Somersworth/Coe-Brown on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and had 46 saves in a Division II loss to Goffstown on Saturday, Jan. 24.

“Logan is a great kid and teammate,” Winnacunnet head coach Kevin Merrick said. “He competes hard and does whatever it takes to make saves.”
