Roundball Roundup: Penfield survives OT thriller, Thomas wins battle at home

Webster Thomas 70, Gates Chili 66

Henry Bonn scored 24 points to lead Thomas to a home win over Gates Chili. 

It was a back-and-forth contest until the final buzzer. At half, the game was tied 30-30. After the third quarter, it was 49-49. 

The two teams traded leads in the final frame. Thomas’ Danny Check opened the scoring with a two-point field goal, giving the Titans the lead. 

Gates tied it back up, then Nehemiah Pye scored on a fast-break layup and drew a foul to put Gates ahead with six minutes remaining. 

Trailing by two points with three minutes to play, Bonn found a lane to the hoop and finished with an and-one to give Thomas the lead right back.

From there, Thomas kept adding on. Jaden Kyles hit a reverse layup to extend the lead with a minute to play, and the Titans held off a last-minute comeback from Gates Chili. 

Kyles had 20 points on the night. Mateo Pietrantoni added 13. 

Gates Chili was led by Pye with 17 points. 

Thomas (8-6) will travel to Hilton on Wednesday, February 4. Gates Chili (10-4) will host Brockport on Monday, February 2. 

Irondequoit 64, Churchville-Chili 59

Irondequoit picked up its fifth win in a row after taking down Churchville-Chili on Friday night. 

Irondequoit held a 35-19 lead at the half. The Eagles maintained their 16-point lead after the third, staying out front 50-34. 

Churchville-Chili rallied back in the final eight minutes, making it just a 62-59 game with 15 seconds remaining. Despite the comeback, Irondequoit sealed the game at the free-throw line to escape with the five-point win. 

Anthony Major earned a double-double for the Eagles with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Roman Maldonado also scored 16 points. 

Churchville-Chili was led by Jacob McGowan with 14 points. 

Irondequoit (13-2) will travel to Victor on Wednesday, February 4. 

Churchville-Chili (7-8) will travel to Fairport on the same evening. 

Penfield 80, Hilton 48

Penfield ran away with a huge win thanks to two of their star juniors.

Junior center Jake McCarthy scored a game-high 18 points for the Patriots, while his classmate C.J. Johnson added 16, including six dunks. Senior Ryan Savino scored 12 in the win.

Jayden Hibbard led Hilton with 10 points.

Penfield (12-1) will next host Gates Chili on Wednesday, February 4th. Hilton (2-12) hosts Webster Thomas on the same night.

Monroe 61, East Rochester 59

Late-game heroics from senior Anthony Omebe helped the Red Jackets get their sixth win on the season.

Monroe led by as many as 16 points early in the third quarter, but a second-half run by East Rochester helped them tie the game at 59 with under 30 seconds to play.

With 15 seconds left, Jordan Reis drove to the rim and passed it off to Omebe, who scored the go-ahead bucket from four feet away over two defenders.

Monroe was led by ninth-grader Ayden Thomas, who scored 16 points in his first-ever varsity game. Tahjier Holmes added 15, followed by Navareon Patton and Jordan Reis, both with eight points.

Monroe (6-3) will next host East High on Monday, February 2nd. East Rochester (8-4) will stay at home for Gananda on the same night.

Edison 64, Rochester Prep 33

After leading just 23-19 at the half, Edison’s offense went off in the final two frames to take a 31-point win over Rochester Prep.

Felix Vazquez paced Edison with 15 points, including seven in the third quarter, to spark the offense. Michael Byrd tallied 11 points, and Cyrus Bridgewater added 10. 

Zaquan Cohen and Ciere Dean led Rochester Prep with eight points each. 

Edison (2-11) will travel to Wilson on Tuesday, February 3. Rochester Prep’s (1-12) next game is a rematch against Edison, set for Friday, February 6. 

Fairport 79, Victor 63

A huge third quarter helped Fairport keep their undefeated streak alive into February.

Fairport led 31-26 at halftime, but a 31-21 run in the third quarter helped them pull ahead and hang on for their 13th win on the season.

Jon Roessel and Hadi Dergham played a big role in the run, as they combined for 15 points in the third quarter. Dergham finished with a team-high 20 points. Alex Grejda followed with 14, while Noah Meabon added 13 of his own.

Victor was led by Ben Fell, who finished the game with 20 points.

Fairport (13-0) will try to keep their perfect season alive against McQuaid on Saturday, January 31st. Victor (10-5) will look to get back on track against Irondequoit on Wednesday, February 4th.

Girls Basketball

Penfield 48, Fairport 42

Penfield defended their home court in an overtime thriller for their fourth win in a row.

Fairport led 23-16 at halftime, but a 9-0 run to open the third quarter gave the Patriots their first lead of the game. The two sides then stayed locked late into the fourth quarter.

With just 18 seconds left, the Red Raiders trailed by three points. Fairport’s Clara Shannon drove into the lane and hit an and-one layup to tie the game at 36.

Jordan Rassmussen opened overtime with a two-point pull-up to give Fairport the lead. Back-to-back threes from Reegan Sercu and Alivia Duckles helped the Patriots extend that lead.

The victory marked Penfield’s second overtime win against Fairport on the season.

Penfield (13-1) will next travel to Spencerport on Tuesday, February 3rd. Fairport (12-3) will look to get back on track against Victor on the same night.

Eastridge 56, Monroe/SWW 33

Kenya Scott’s double-double of 19 points and 17 rebounds helped lift Eastridge to the road win over Monroe/SWW. 

The Lancers held a 27-13 lead at the half. They extended it to 42-25 with the final quarter to play, having no trouble holding off Monroe/SWW to come away with the win. 

Eastridge’s Qa’Mariona Green came away with 12 points in the win, while Gabriella Rawlins finished with 10.

Kimani Mitchell led Monroe/SWW with 12 points. Jazmine Flowers scored 11. 

Eastridge (8-6) travels to Sutherland on Saturday, January 31. Monroe/SWW (2-11) will travel to Newark on Monday, February 2.
