Everything you want to know about the Super Bowl but didn't know to ask

Here’s everything a neophyte needs to know and afraid to ask about today’s big game, also known as Super Bowl LX (60).

The who, where and whens

The Super Bowl will be played Sunday, Feb. 8. It is being played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The Seattle Seahawks, 16-3 will take on the New England Patriots 17-3 in the Super Bowl. The Patriots have one extra win because as second seed in AFC they had to play in all three playoff rounds. Seattle as the number one seed only had to play in the final two rounds.

Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m., shortly after Charlie Puth sings the national anthem, and is being broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock. The game will be preceded by Green Day. They are expected to perform around 6 p.m. during the game’s opening ceremony. At half time, Bad Bunny will provide the halftime perfromance.

The last time these teams met was in Super Bowl XLIX (49) on Feb. 1, 2015, held in Phoenix. The New England Patriots won after a last-minute interception as Seattle was driving for the go-ahead touchdown.

Pizza is champion snack

For many, the Super Bowl is an unofficial American holiday. For America’s employers, Super Sunday is followed by Super-Sick Monday, according to hrgrapevine.com. Nearly one in five workers admit they call in sick, according to hrgrapevine.com. That could cost the American economy almost $2 billion.

For New Jersey pizzerias and the pizza giants like Dominoes and Pizza Hut, the Super Bowl is a tremendous boon to business. More than 12 million pizzas are expected to be sold. It is either the first or second biggest day for selling pizzas, rivaled only by Halloween, pizzeria owners say.

The favorite dip is avocado and millions of pounds of chips are sold for the Big Game. For snack companies that sell chips, corn potato, etc. the Super Bowl only lags behind July 4 and other summer events, according to SNAC International.

Why Roman numerals

The use of Roman numerals were adopted to clarify any confusion that may occur because the NFL Championship Game – the Super Bowl – is played in the year following a chronologically recorded season, according to a NFL media handout for Super Bowl XL (40). Numerals I through IV were added later for the first four Super Bowls.

They were first used in Super Bowl V (5) and applied retroactively to the first four and have been used since except for one year. In 2016, the NFL forewent the use of a Roman numeral for Super Bowl 50, rather than “Super Bowl L.”
