The NFL is returning to Estadio Azteca (now called Estadio Banorte) in 2026, and it sounds like the San Francisco 49ers will be the designated home team.
The Niners are set to host a game in Mexico City, according to a report from ESPN’s John Sutcliffe. 49ers owner Jed York previously teased the possibility earlier this month.
If that report is accurate, it could be notable for the Denver Broncos, who are set to play a “road” game against San Francisco in 2026. Mexico is Denver’s designated international market, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos picked as the 49ers’ opponent — but we are only speculating at this point.
The NFL will host nine international games during the 2026 season, including a game in Australia featuring the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco, which means the 49ers could end up playing two games abroad next season. Here’s a look at the confirmed (and rumored) schedule so far, with a hat tip to @gregfeltes.
NFL international schedule 2026
- Mexico: 49ers vs. TBA
- Australia: Rams vs. 49ers
- Brazil: Cowboys vs. TBA
- France: Saints vs. Browns
- Germany: Giants vs. TBA
- England: Jaguars vs. TBA
- England: Commanders vs. TBA
- England: Lions or Falcons?
- Spain: Bears, Lions or Falcons?
Note that not all of the above teams have been officially confirmed. Of the teams listed above, Denver’s list of road opponents next season only includes San Francisco. So, assuming the Broncos will not host an international game in 2026, if Denver plays outside the U.S. this season, it will likely be in Mexico against the 49ers.
