Luis Enrique is reportedly one of the main contenders to Michael Carrick for the permanent job as Manchester United head coach.

It’s hard to ignore what Michael Carrick has achieved so far, with Manchester United still unbeaten under his leadership after five games in charge as interim head coach.

And yet, Luis Enrique’s style and experience at the highest levels of European football offer something different that will surely catch the eye of Ineos.

Enrique has expressed interest in working in the Premier League, but convincing him to leave Paris Saint-Germain would be no easy task for Ineos.

During an appearance on The Overlap, Rooney advised United to move away from the pursuit of big-name European managers and instead focus on Carrick, citing his deep ties and genuine connection to the club.

“I think with Luis Enrique, I’ve been there and we’ve tried different managers. We tried Mourinho and Van Gaal, then we tried the likes of Ten Hag and Amorim, and they don’t work,” Rooney said.

“I just think Carrick makes sense. I felt that from the minute I knew he was going in. He’s a real calming influence.”

“I think we’re sometimes quick to overlook what’s right here in front of us and say ‘we’ve got this manager from Turkey or Spain who is going to come in and do this’ but actually they’ve got no interest in the football club.”At least this will give the foundations for the club to keep building. The infrastructure will be back at the football club.”
