Nebraska officially announced the promotions of two assistant coaches to lead the special teams unit. Brett Maher will serve as the special teams coordinator and Nick Humphrey has been named the co-special teams coordinator.
Maher kicked and punted at Nebraska from 2008 to 2012. He was the Big Ten Kicker of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and was Punter of the Year in 2011.
He kicked in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, and Los Angeles Rams. Maher joined the Nebraska staff in 2024 as a special teams consultant.
Nick Humphrey joined the Nebraska coaching staff in 2025 as a special teams analyst. He played for the Tennessee Volunteers from 2017 to 2022. Matt Rhule believes these two working together will help the unit take the next step in its development.
“Brett Maher and Nick Humphrey are both rising stars in the coaching profession. Both Brett and Nick played an integral role in the dramatic improvement of our special teams last season, and they are prepared to coordinate these units. Our goal is to continue to have elite special teams play that contributes directly to winning football.”
The two coaches will replace Mike Ekeler, who left after one season on staff for a job with the USC Trojans.
