Is a New York / New Jersey event a *lock* on the PGA Tour's future schedule?

Growing up as a huge golf fan who lived in New Jersey, there were three things you could count on every August: 1. my game finally starting to come around, 2. high school football practice starting and rendering my golf season over, 3. the PGA Tour coming to MY area of the country for The Barclays/Northern Trust.

In reality, it hasn’t been that long since that playoff event—now known as the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which is played in Memphis—was played in the New York/New Jersey area. It was in 2021 when Tony Finau won in a playoff over Cameron Smith at Liberty National. Just reading that last sentence makes it feel like a lifetime ago, though, doesn’t it?

Well, the waiting might be over. As you may have heard, there are significant changes coming to the PGA Tour schedule, specifically the tour honing in on the biggest sports markets during the meat of the season to “own the summer.” Last I checked, my area of the country is one of those markets.

One tour pro who spoke to Golf Digest this past week at Riviera, and recently sat in a PGA Tour players meeting, said he’d be “stunned” if that wasn’t the case. That’s good news for rabid golf fans who reside in the tri-state area and have longed for the days of “The Barclays.”

To hear more about what that player had to say about the tour’s future schedule, plus some other boots on the ground thoughts and takes from the Genesis Invitational, please have a listen to this week’s episode of The Loop podcast below.
