When you needed him most, he delivered. Captain Clutch, Collin Chandler, drilled a 3-pointer with less than two minutes remaining to give Kentucky Basketball a 64-57 lead that helped them eventually take down the South Carolina Gamecocks, 72-63.
Chandler only had five points before that shot.
Kentucky closed the game on a 13-6 run for a nine-point victory. Denzel Aberdeen led the Wildcats with 19 points, with Collin Chandler and Mouhamed Dioubate also in double figures.
Kentucky did just enough to win in South Carolina Tuesday night. The three-game losing streak is over. That’s one win.
Let’s get another one Saturday against Vandy.
First Half
South Carolina made four 3s in the first five-plus minutes, taking an early 12-7 lead.
Kentucky was missing a lot of open shots early, including Brandon Garrison missing a dunk. But the Wildcats eventually found a rhythm, with Denzel Aberdeen hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to give them a 19-15 lead with 7:52 to play.
Those were two of Aberdeen’s 3-pointers in a 13-0 run to give Kentucky a 22-15 lead.
The 13-0 run was the difference in the first half. If it wasn’t for that, Kentucky’s offense would have a much worse stat line. Kentucky scored just six points in the final 6:39 of the first half.
Kentucky shot just 11-31 from the field in the first half, including 4-16 from 3-point range.
But where the Wildcats made their mark was on the board, out-rebounding the Gamecocks 26-15. The Wildcats had eight offensive rebounds.
Over the final 10:54, Kentucky held the Gamecocks to just six points. South Carolina shot just 25 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-16 from 3-point range.
Second Half
The struggles continued in the second half, with Kentucky continuing to miss open looks and turn the ball over.
It seemed like their best offense was getting to the free-throw line, which, on some trips, resulted in an and-1. That’s good.
When one thing seemed to go well for the Wildcats, another thing didn’t.
You look up at the scoreboard and see that Oweh only has six points, Chandler only has three points, and no one besides Denzel Aberdeen was really contributing.
Kentucky kept up its prowess on the glass, which was its saving grace in this game. Mouhaed Dioubate was on the boards on both ends, fighting for rebounds and driving to the basket.
Kentucky led 59-52 at the under-four media timeout and 3:30 remaining. It was time to close out the game. They would do just that, with a 13-4 run led by a Chandler 3-pointer and dunk, along with clutch free-throw shooting.
MVP: Denzel Aberdeen
It may be by default, but he deserves it. The senior was in attack mode all night. If it wasn’t for him, the Wildcats may not have won this game. There were other solid performers, and Aberdeen stood out the most among all Kentucky players.

Kentucky vs. South Carolina Twitter Reactions
Big Blue Nation sweated that one out. Here are the best Twitter reactions.
The fact Carolina is losing this game is a testament to just how bad they are.

Denzel Aberdeen is stepping up in Columbia. Massive. Thank you.

Overall just an ugly half. Rebounds really the only thing going Kentucky’s way consistently this game. Turnovers should be better and points should be easier to come by given the opponent quality.

UK and South Carolina have spent most of the night playing like NBA’s Pacers, Kings, Pelicans and Nets trying to tank the season to prepare for next draft.

.@KentuckyMBB Trent Noah only 3-17 from 3 in SEC play.

When Kentucky won eight of nine SEC games they turned it over 9.3 times per game. We WATCHED this team, without their PG1, take GREAT care of the ball.
During this three-game losing streak they’ve turned it over 14, 13, and 14 times respectively.
NINE in the first half tonight.

Kentucky has done everything possible to keep South Carolina in this game.
– 15 turnovers
– 12/21 on layups and dunks— Tristan Pharis (@TristanUda) February 25, 2026
This is up there for worst games from Otega Oweh. Flat out been terrible tonight.

Kentucky won
That’s what is important. Probably locked up the NCAA tourney berth
Now let’s try not to play on Wednesday in the SEC tourney and beat Vandy

South Carolina scored 97 points Saturday …. 40 points less so far …

Denzel Aberdeen on SEC Network: “We just wanted to get back to what Kentucky basketball is and come in and just get the win”
— Wyatt Huff (@Wildcat_wave) February 25, 2026
NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR WINNING!!!
Kentucky needed to win tonight and they, eventually, found a way to win.
That performance was NOT good, but ultimately the WIN counts the same.
Go ‘Cats!

.@KentuckyMBB is now 4-1 in the @CoachMarkPope era when both teams shoot worse than 40% from the field

Great finish overshadows sloppy game. Cats end 3-game slide 72-63 over USC — Keith Taylor (@keithtaylor21) February 25, 2026 Kentucky beats S Carolina 72-63. Not Kentucky’s strongest performance, but they made the big plays at the end, when it mattered. A team effort, highlighted by Aberdeen, Jelavic, and Mo D. Three regular season games left, Vandy, A&M, and Florida, need to get one. pic.twitter.com/ZdCQJAjkKr — Tristan Pharis (@TristanUda) February 25, 2026 Shout out to the Kentucky crowd that made the trip to Columbia. They were loud in that 2nd Half — Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) February 25, 2026 One small bright spot… That was a DOMINANT rebounding performance by Kentucky. 43.9% on the offensive glass. Pretty much won them the game. — Brandon Ramsey (@BRamseyKSR) February 25, 2026 Not surprisingly, Mo Dioubate was the Kentucky +/- champ tonight at +16. — Jeff Drummond (@JDrumUK) February 25, 2026 South Carolina missed 9 of their last 13 shots Kentucky adjusting the defense was huge. Early in the game they struggled to take advantage, but the offense opened up in the final few minutes — Wyatt Huff (@Wildcat_wave) February 25, 2026 Tonight is just the 3rd time in the @CoachMarkPope era that @KentuckyMBB has won a game scoring 72 points or less (3-11 record in such games) — Corey Price (@coreyp08) February 25, 2026 Mood: Happy. #BBNpic.twitter.com/98ROioNwkd — Terry Brown™️ (@TBrown_80) February 25, 2026
