Underwear Olympics: Adam Randall looks to prove himself at combine

The NFL combine is in just a couple of days, and nine ClemsonTigers are looking to increase their draft stock. In this series, we’re going to dive into each player and break down exactly what they’ll need to do in Indy to separate themselves and solidify their draft value.

Adam Randall is a prototypical-sized, inexperienced running back with perfect traits and inconsistent film. He’s currently fighting to get drafted, projected just outside the top 200 in most experts’ big boards.

How He Could Rise

Just by looking huge. This event is dubbed the “Underwear Olympics” due to the short, slim-fit attire of the athletes during athletic testing. It’s awkwardly common how often players gain genuine traction at the combine solely based on their otherworldly physique (think DK Metcalf, TJ Watt, and Anthony Richardson standing next to Bryce Young). Randall stands at 6’2, 230 lbs, and runs a 4.3 40. That’s around seven pounds lighter and almost a quarter-second faster than Derrick Henry. In the spirit of not sounding hyperbolic, it’s important to note the one-to-one Derrick Henry comp ends there. Randall’s tape does not resemble Derrick Henry at Alabama, and the production and experience are far different. However, if any GM can see some untapped potential in Randall, he would absolutely deserve a Day 3 selection.

How He Could Fall

Interviews. He is a one-year starter at running back, and the film shows that. These interviews are ruthless, and Randall presents the opportunity for particularly harsh questioning. He could be called a failed wide receiver, relegated to the backfield. You could point to his lost usage as Gideon Davidson found his footing. You could package together an impressive collection of missed assignments, poor gap discipline, and flawed vision. Randall will have to navigate these concerns well, or he’ll be considered a UDFA come draft time.
