Miami and Florida are two of college baseball’s most decorated programs, and they will renew their decades-long rivalry with a matchup of top-20 teams this weekend in Coral Gables.
The 17th-ranked Hurricanes (10-0) play host to the in-state series this year and have mostly obliterated their opponents to date. Miami is averaging 15.5 runs per game, best in the nation, and outscored Lafayette 73-12 in a four-game series last weekend. Fifth-year senior outfielder Derek Williams is batting .563 with four home runs and 15 RBIs so far, while top-100 MLB Draft prospect Daniel Cuvet leads the team with six homers.
The 10th-ranked Gators dropped their season opener against UAB but have been on a roll since then, entering the weekend at 9-1 and averaging more than 10 runs per game themselves. Sophomore Brendan Lawson is among the nation’s leaders with 19 RBIs after driving in six against FIU earlier this week.
This three-game series between the Sunshine State teams is poised to tilt the balance of power in the rivalry’s history. Entering Friday, the 273 games the teams have played against each other dating to 1940 have resulted in 136 victories each for the Hurricanes and Gators, plus one tie in 1952.
Who will be able to claim all-time bragging rights (until next season, at least) at the end of the weekend? Here’s how to watch all the action.
