Former Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller is off to a great start with the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS,. but he recently took some time to talk to Bild about an odd topic — who his favorite pundit is.
“In keeping with his spirit, I’m just going to throw one out there. Curtain up for Didi Hamann. Didi often has opinions that I don’t share. But what’s much more important to me is that he presents his arguments coherently, defends his theses with passion, and is authentic in doing so. I think that’s good, and that’s what matters,” Müller told Bild. “For me, successful football entertainment includes experts who sometimes put forward bold theories that people can argue about. As long as it doesn’t go below the belt, it’s part of the game.”
Hamnn, of course, has been a longtime critic of Bayern Munich. Bill assembled some of his greatest hits (no pun intended):
Examples: In October 2024, sporting director Max Eberl (52) lost his temper after Hamann criticized the €100 million transfer fee for Harry Kane (32): “Didi Hamann is like tinnitus! He pops up every three days.”
After the DFB match against the Netherlands, Hamann wrote in his Sky column on September 11, 2024: “Musiala is more of an individual player and often a solo entertainer. When he gets the ball ten times, nine times he puts his head down and starts dribbling.”
Sports director Christoph Freund (48) countered: “Absurd! In other countries, such young players would be highly praised.”
Hamann had a long-standing feud with Thomas Tuchel (52)! In early 2024, he described the former Bayern coach as “the biggest misunderstanding since Jürgen Klinsmann.” The Sky expert even had to publicly apologize for his factually incorrect criticism of Tuchel’s enthusiasm about a job in the Spanish league (and not as Xavi’s direct successor at FC Barcelona). Tuchel, however, said: “I don’t buy it.”
Honorary president Uli Hoeneß (74) then ranted in the FAZ: “It’s one thing to be attacked once, you have to be able to take that. But when attacks keep coming from the same direction, then sometimes you have to express that you’ve had enough.”
Not a bad portfolio, eh?
