Apple has wasted no time in starting to test the next release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS 26, etc. The 26.6 releases focus on bug fixes and security updates, but there’s an interesting additional function: it optimizes the Spotlight search index in preparation for iOS 27 this fall.

The release notes for iOS 26.6 read: “This update includes bug fixes, security updates and optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.”
That last big is especially interesting. Beta testers of iOS 27 have noted that it can take days to update and optimize the Spotlight index, during which time some of the features (especially Siri AI’s personal context capabilities) won’t work as well as they should. It could be that Apple is updating the way the index operates and getting that process started earlier, so the process will be very quick when users upgrade to iOS 27 this fall.
Recent iOS updates have had an unusually large number of security fixes. The Apple security releases page lists a staggering 77 updates, including 13 kernel updates and 8 WebKit entries.
