Day after: Final thoughts on Notre Dame football’s impressive win over Purdue

It is a somewhat happy Sunday for Notre Dame football, as they got its first win of the 2025 season, soundly defeating the Purdue Boilermakers 56-30.

There were times when the game wasn’t as pretty as we would have liked to see, but the Irish still broke through and got the victory. The offense looked great, while there are still some issues with the defense.

After getting a chance to digest what we saw from Notre Dame on Saturday, here are my final thoughts on the Irish’s win over the Boilermakers.

Defense still has issues

It’s not what we expect to see, as the Boilermakers actually scored more points than the Miami Hurricanes, who are a much better team. The struggles continued, but there were some bright spots. The finally got to the quarterback with 3 sacks and the defensive backs picked off two passes. All of those were big plays, and Notre Dame needed every single one of them. The defense is still a work in progress, but there were some positives on Saturday.

CJ Carr continues impressive start

What a game from Carr, as he completed 10-of-12 passes for 223-yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The only blemish he had on Saturday was a blindside sack, where he fumbled and Purdue recovered. Aside from that, it was a very impressive game and one that he can build off of.

Jeremiyah Love ran with more determination

This was the kind of effort that we expect to see in the first two games from Love. The offensive line deserves tons of credit, as they opened the holds for him to run through. Love ended setting a single-game career high in yardage with 157 on 19 carries. He’s score two touchdowns as well, and it was a much needed big game from Love.

Jadarian Price needs more touches

Jadarian Price touched the football 11-times on Saturday and four of them ended with him crossing to goal line. Anytime a player scores on 36% of his touches, it’s a huge performance, which is exactly what happened. There is an argument to be made that Price needs to see the ball more, and after Saturday’s performance, it’s more than justified.

Great to see the backups get plenty of playing time

When playing any team that isn’t as talented, you want to get the backups as much times as possible. It would have been great to see them play the entire second half, but they did get almost a full quarter of game time. Quarterback Kenny Minchey looked great, and Nolan James showed flashes of what could be in store for the Irish at running back. The second-team defense looked solid as well, with Madden Faraimo really standing out.

Building blocks for the coming weeks

This win was exactly what Notre Dame needed, it will go a long way for this team. They needed to see their hard work paying off with a victory, which is what happened. Was it pretty? Sure some aspect were, but this could be a great jumping point for this team. If Notre Dame can start a run similar to last season, we’ll look back on this game as the first step to getting back to being a championship-level squad.
