Sunday was an eventful day for the NFC South, filled with multiple peaks and valleys as the Atlanta Falcons were shut out for the first time since 2021, and the New Orleans Saints tied a record that was nothing to be proud of.
During the team’s 44-13 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Saints tied the most first-half points allowed in team history, per ESPN Research. And this is not just a franchise record, it’s also tied for the record standing for all of football. The record was originally set against the Falcons in Week 1 of the 1973 season, when the Saints fell 62-7.
Some is the same and some is different between these two games, with the Saints held scoreless in the first quarter of that 1973 affair in Tulane Stadium. One of the commonalities is that New Orleans did not score in the first quarter of Sunday’s game, either, putting up a grand total of six points in the second quarter.

Over that same time span, the Saints gave up 21 points in the first quarter, surrendering an additional 17 points in the second quarter. The Saints are now 0-3 for the first time since 2016, and will hope to finish out the year with a better record than the 5-9 record that 1973 team finished their season out with. New Orleans will have the opportunity to get to the right side of the win column as they face the Buffalo Bills on the road next week. Kickoff is set for Noon CT/1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 28.
