LeBron James talks about his pregame superstitions

Pro athletes are some of the most superstitious people who walk the face of the earth. Many of them have deeply entrenched routines and rituals that they feel compelled to perform on a regular basis, whether it’s taking the same route to the arena, eating the same pregame meal at the same place or getting dressed in the same order.

LeBron James is entering his 23rd season, which will set a new NBA record, so it’s safe to say he has his share of rituals and superstitions. He recently did an interview on Complex’s 360 with Speedy, and he talked about a couple of his pregame superstitions, especially when it comes to his choice of footwear.

“I am always the same unless I feel something is off. I will lay my uniform out, the same way before every game. I will pick a shoe that I’m going to wear according sometimes to either the opponent or the team. If I’m playing a certain player, a specific shoe may get worn that night just because of my competitive nature. Like a colorway… But, if I go out in warmups and I feel a certain way and the shoes don’t feel right, I will absolutely run back to the locker room and change before the game starts. Or if I’m [expletive] in the first quarter, they getting swapped out. I haven’t swapped out many shoes cause it’s not many [expletive] quarters for me.”

No one can really argue with the results. Despite turning 40 years of age last December, James put up 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game while shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range last season. Although he’s going into the final year of his current contract, it is starting to seem conceivable that he will not only play beyond this season but perhaps continue to play at a high level.
