Steve Angeli injury update: Syracuse QB confirms Achilles surgery, out for season

Three days after Syracuse football toppled Clemson, its quarterback revealed his 2025 season is over.

Orange quarterback Steve Angeli announced on Tuesday, Sept. 23 that he underwent a successful surgery on a torn Achilles tendon on Monday, a procedure that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

A Notre Dame transfer in his first season with the program, Angeli had impressed in the early weeks of the season. While helping lead coach Fran Brown’s team to a 3-1 start, Angeli had thrown for 1,316 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions despite playing behind an occasionally porous offensive line.

Angeli had left the Orange’s 34-21 victory against Clemson in the third quarter with a non-contact injury, with subsequent reports and Angeli’s announcement confirming the worst fears with such an injury.

Steve Angeli injury update

Angeli has undergone surgery on a torn Achilles tendon, he announced on social media, which will hold him out for the remainder of the 2025 season.

“I’ve learned through life and football that God doesn’t give us anything we can’t handle and I couldn’t be more fired up for the challenge to fight through this and become a better man and a better player!” Angeli wrote in a post on social media.

Angeli had originally gotten hurt in the first half of the victory against Clemson when a Tigers defensive player landed on him as he slid at the end of a rush, but he returned to the game after missing only one play.

In the third quarter, though, Angeli scrambled out of the pocket to his right and tripped. He remained on the turf and had to be helped off the field, unable to put any weight on his leg. He left the stadium in a boot and on crutches.

Brown initially told reporters after the game that Angeli “won’t be here for a couple of weeks,” but reports emerged Sunday, Sept. 21 that the quarterback had torn his Achilles, a serious injury with a lengthy and arduous rehab process.

Angeli’s 1,316 yards this season are the second-most among all FBS quarterbacks, putting him narrowly behind Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson and his 1,320 yards.

Angeli will have the opportunity to redshirt and play as many as two more college seasons, provided he would want to do so. A redshirt junior, Angeli played in only four games this season. Thanks to a rule change in 2018, Division I football players can appear in up to four regular-season games without burning their redshirt for the season, meaning the four games he played in this season wouldn’t count against his eligibility clock.
