A football fan suffered severe injuries and was taken to hospital by helicopter after an accident during Heidenheim’s 2-1 Bundesliga victory against Augsburg on Saturday.

“Shortly before the end of today’s match, one of our FCH fans fell from the fence of the east stand into the pitch,” Heidenheim said on their website.

“He was stabilised in the Voith Arena and then taken to hospital. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all those who helped on site.

“FCH and FC Augsburg are thinking of you, your family and all your friends. We are sending you all the strength in the world so that you can get well again as soon as possible.”

Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said shortly after their first season win that the fan was “fighting for his life.” The fan was taken to hospital in a helicopter which landed on the pitch.

Fans stopped their support after the accident happened and flags and banners shielded the man and the paramedics treating him. The post-match news conferences of the coaches were cancelled after brief statements in support of the injured fan.
