SEC power rankings have a new No. 1 after Georgia's loss

The SEC delivered with several one-score games in strong Week 5 schedule. Most notably, the Alabama Crimson Tide went on the road and upset the Georgia Bulldogs in 24-21 win. Alabama avoided picking up a second loss on the season and is 1-0 in SEC play. Meanwhile, Georgia is no longer the top team in our power rankings.

Ole Miss‘ offense delivered an impressive performance against a stacked LSU defense in a 24-19 home win. The Rebels have raced out to a 3-0 record in SEC games this season and are in the driver’s seat to make the SEC championship. Ole Miss’ hot start is just enough for us to rank them No. 1 in our power rankings, but there’s not much separation at top. Teams ranked No. 1 through No. 5 all have an argument to be the best team in the SEC.

Despite having a bye week, Oklahoma is one of our biggest losers of the week in the conference. Sooners star quarterback John Mateer is out after having hand surgery. His injury drops Oklahoma in our power rankings.

Tennessee earned a narrow overtime road win at Mississippi State to pick up their first SEC win over the year. Texas A&M beat Auburn at home behind a strong defensive performance to continue their undefeated season. South Carolina dominated Kentucky, who is looking like the weakest team in the SEC.

Vanderbilt and Missouri all took care of business and got wins against weak nonconference opponents in Week 5. Notre Dame embarrassed Arkansas at home in a game that was over at halftime.

Florida, Texas and Oklahoma are the three SEC teams that had byes in Week 5.
