Lions fight off Browns, improve to 3-1 with working class home win

For the third week in a row, the Detroit Lions enjoy the sweet taste of victory. The Lions earned a hard-fought victory by a 34-10 margin over the visiting Cleveland Browns.

The game felt closer than the final score indicates, in part because of the spirited play of the Browns defense. Cleveland’s D, under the guidance of former Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, created problems for Jared Goff and the Detroit offense. Detroit gained just 277 yards and picked up only 16 first downs, both well below their averages. Cleveland entered the game with the NFL’s top-ranked defense and largely validated that status despite giving up 34 points.

The Lions took advantage of three Cleveland turnovers, including one of the worst interceptions you’ll ever see–courtesy of Joe Flacco to Kerby Joseph. Kalif Raymond returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the Lions ahead 27-10, part of a stronger showing from Detroit’s special teams than from the first few games.

Jared Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for two touchdowns, as the two hooked up on all seven targets, netting 70 yards. While Goff was clicking with St Brown, there were real struggles between the quarterback and wideout Jameson Williams (2 catches, 8 targets, 40 total yards). Goff was not sacked on the day, though the Browns did generate considerable pressure with Myles Garrett, Isaiah McGuire and company.

The Lions bagged three sacks of Joe Flacco, including an Aidan Hutchinson strip sack that linebacker Trevor Nowaske recovered to really seal the victory. Detroit’s defense allowed just 10 first downs on Cleveland’s final 12 possessions after surrendering a touchdown on the Browns’ impressive opening drive.

The 3-1 Lions head to Cincinnati in Week 5 for a third straight date with an AFC North foe. Cleveland falls to 1-3 and heads to London to play the Vikings next Sunday.
