Well, at least there’s one AFC East quarterback who remembers that Cam Newton played in the NFL.
Charlotte, N.C. native Drake Maye led the New England Patriots to a dominant 42-13 win over his hometown Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The victory saw the second-year passer complete 14 of his 17 throws for 204 yards and score three total touchdowns—one of which was punctuated by a super tribute . . .

After the game, Maye was asked about his “SuperCam” celebration as well as the impact Newton had on him as a fan.
“I think it was cool seeing those jerseys. Right when I saw ’em in those jerseys, it reminded me of Cam,” Maye replied. “Just the energy he brought. I don’t show much emotion out there, I should probably show more. It’s a fun-loving position. I think he played the position in a different way than a lot of people do. I think the guys around him rallied around him.
“Yeah, the other one late in—I think maybe the third or the fourth—I had a safety one-one-one. I know Cam woulda probably took him on and tried to score. I got to meet him, and got to meet him through the process. Big fan. He was my favorite player growing up. So, pretty cool.”
Maye was born in Huntersville, N.C. on Aug. 30, 2002. He’d play his high school ball at Myers Park in Charlotte, then attended the University of North Carolina from 2021 to 2023.
The Patriots selected Maye with the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft. He was named a Pro Bowler as a rookie . . . just like his fun-loving idol.
