Big takeaways from the Steelers thrilling win over the Vikings

Somehow, the Pittsburgh Steelerscontinue to defy the odds and win games they really have no business winning. Sunday was just the latest example of that. The Steelers snuck past the Minnesota Vikings 24-21 after a late rally by the Vikings fell short. Pittsburgh is now sitting at 3-1 and on top in the AFC North and can head into the bye week feeling pretty good.

Here are our big takeaways from another improbable victory.

The defense stays opportunistic but not efficient

For the second straight week, the Steelers defense relied on big plays to counter all the yards they allowed. Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns but they were balanced out with a pair of interceptions and six sacks.

Kenneth Gainwell might be the starting running back

Watching Kenneth Gainwell rack up 99 yards rushing and lead the team in receptions really has us questioning if he shouldn’t be the feature back even when Jaylen Warren comes from his knee injury. Gainwell certainly seems like he is better suited to work with this inconsistent offensive line.

You are as good as your record

Steelers fans are going to spend the next week nitpicking their 3-1, AFC North-leading team, which is absolutely typical of the Steelers. What they should be doing is enjoying seeing T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig racking up sack numbers, the emergence on Sunday of Keeanu Benton or just how special wide receiver DK Metcalf can be. This is a good football team because even when the numbers make no sense they figure out how to get it done and sometimes that is what wins in the NFL.
